I’m so excited to for today’s post because spring cleaning gets me so inspired!! There are few things that give me more simple joy than organizing and making my space feel like me. Today we will be conquering my closet! This is a super long one so grab a treat and a cup of coffee!!
The changing of seasons always helps me want to reorganize, especially because I always feel like I have nothing to wear until I look through everything again. Honestly, this might not seem like the biggest transformation. I tend to keep my closet in pretty good shape in terms of categories and a color code. But it definitely does not look this clean everyday. This is my closet on its best day – like school picture day lol.
I usually do some sort of clean out in my closet two or three times a year, but it somehow always feels like it’s still sooo stuffed full. This season I decided I have too much space to feel like it’s that crowded! I think my main issue is that I typically only get rid of the items that just look kinda old. But not today! Today I’m going into full purge mode, and you should too!! Keep reading to see my process of spring cleaning!!
1. The Purge/Elimination – Before any of the reorganization can happen, we really have to make some space! I love having a lot of options, but I really wanted my closet to feel ~ airy~, so I had to make some cuts. I would suggest taking out as much as you can so you can really look at everything you have. I judged everything – undies to scarves. If you have bins or baskets, take those out, too, so that you can open the area to a new set up. Usually I just slide through my hangers and let this step go fast, but today, I tried everything on. This really made the difference between getting rid of just a few things and making a big dent! My thought process consists of a few qualifications:
Fit – If it doesn’t fit, it’s obviously going.
Age – I didn’t keep anything that looked just too old. Rips and stains are not cute!
Joy – In the spirit of Marie Kondo, I tried to only keep the items that I really felt in love with. I personally adore shopping, and there are way too many new things I love and want to bring home. I can’t justify that when my closet is already overflowing!
Comfort – Does it feel good to have on all day long? There were a few sweaters I had to part with just because of itching! That really made me sad, but it had to be done.
One rule I really don’t follow that I know a lot of people preach about is the last time you wore it. I understand the science of this, but sometimes there’s a piece I really love, and it just doesn’t work for every day life! But take this with a grain of salt 🙂
2. Cleanse – Now that everything has been removed and there’s more space, make it feel clean! I found several hidden clothing tags and stickers that never found my trash. I swept the floor and cleaned all of the shelf areas. And then it was ready for a new set-up!!
3. Organize – Yay!!! My favorite part. Like I said earlier, my closet is typically pretty put together. But I still felt like some things weren’t really where they were meant to be. It was time to switch it up!
This is the time when you could also consider some new methods of closet organization. Some things I considered:
Home Life drawer – I’ve been seeing this trend of having a drawer of clothes that are specifically reserved for things you wear at home. The benefit of this is that you keep your nice clothes nice, and you have some options of things that are easy to grab that are perfect for a day at home. I decided to try this idea, but it looks slightly different in my closet. I really don’t have empty drawers to work with, so I made mine a home “shelf” instead. My items are comfy and presentable, but not things I feel sad wasting when I’m not going to be leaving the house.
Work Out section – I have forever kept my sports bras and work out shorts together, but this time I decided to add in my leggings that I only wear for exercising. It just makes it easier to grab and get dressed!
4. Placement – The bigger your closet, the bigger this step is. I have a lot of space, but for some reason, it’s difficult for me to place things where they belong. I went as far as measuring out the different sections in my closet to see which spots were the biggest. My sweatshirts were taking up valuable property, and my tops were stuffed into a tiny area. So I reworked that, and now I feel much more put together.
My sandals used to live in a smaller bin at the top of my shoe shelf, but it was soo full and too hard to work with!
My sweater shelves have room to grow!! That’s what I like to see 🙂
I switched some things around and put my skirts and shorts into bins. It’s much better now!
So that’s it for spring cleaning my closet! Maybe you will all feel inspired to make some space for new Spring clothes 🙂 Happy organizing, friends!! I hope it brings you all a little joy.
